If you are interested in getting involved in Single Action Shooting Society (SASS) or Cowboy Action Shooting (CAS), you have come to the right place. Experience Rhino Tactical’s Jimmy Flores former champion SASS alias “Navarone” and his unique way of training for 3 gun cowboy events. In this Cowboy Action Shooting crash course you will learn (actual course curriculum is larger and more involved) :

  • How to join SASS and get locations of all California and distant events
  • Scoring and Timing
  • Cowboy Range Safety
  • Guns and gear- Gun and Caliber choice, Leather gear choice, Gear placement, clothing
  • Course breakdown and strategy- Target types, scoring and penalties
  • Match results- How to read and translate them into improvement
  • How to improve – Using a shooter’s log, taking notes
  • Mental attitude- Hey its a game

After this course, the shooter will be able to attend any of the shown clubs in the area and feel confident as to what they can expect throughout the day. You will leave a “seasoned veteran” with a full understanding of the sport and be ready to conquer any course that is thrown at you!!

Pistol will be either single action only and or period 45 ACP guns and will require a minimum of 200 rounds in either 45LC, 45 ACP, 44 special, 44-40 or 38 special (whatever your caliber in guns of the period only!)

Shotguns will be either double barrels, model 97 pumps, and or 1887 lever action shotguns. Trainees are required to bring at least 75 rounds of low recoil bird shot in guage of their choice.

Rifles will be of the period (i.e. Winchester, Henry, Rossi, Marlin or like variant) chambered in 38 special, 44-40, 45LC or acceptable cowboy rifle caliber. Trainees are required to bring at least 200 rounds of appropriate rifle caliber.

Safety glasses, hearing protection, Long pants,appropriate shirt ,boots, and cowboy hat will be required to simulate actual match feel when moving through the stages of fire.

In the next phase of The Cowboy Action Course, we will now begin to introduce new techniques and training methods that will help you begin to polish your single action shooting abilities. The course requires that you have completed the Basic Cowboy Course( above) or can show us that you are already a member of SASS and wish to hone those “shooting iron” skills. This Intermediate Cowboy Action shooting course will cover the following concepts(actual course curriculum is larger and more involved):

  • Shooting right and left handed – Draws and Cross Draws, examination of technique.
  • Shooting on the move with Pistol rifle and shotgun
  • Course order and gaming the course
  • Intermediate reloading techniques and different types for your particular shotgun
  • Bare essence of speed
  • Utilizing every milisecond with the virtual time machine
  • Consolidation of motion- theories and practice.
  • Steel target focus
  • Mind focus
  • Relaxation techniques
  • Dealing with pre-match anxiety
  • Shooting goals and how to supercharge and shorten the learning curve.
  • Self awareness and streamlining body mechanics and techniques.
  • Intermediate Shooting course work.
  • Correct shooting order sequences

The last and final evolution in the cowboy action set of courses is designed to make you shoot like a machine. You will be taught some of the most advanced and up to date tricks, tips, and techniques for making you a champion shooter with a little dedication and work! Pre-requisite students for this course are shooters who have taken the basic, intermediate or can show us extreme proficiency with the single action shooting platforms. At this level, ALL shooters must be SASS members to even be considered for the course. The SASS Advanced Cowboy Action Shooting  and Techniques will include the following criteria (actual course curriculum is larger and more involved):

  • Mind focus
  • Advanced match relaxation and relaxation techniques
  • advanced heart rate principles and fine motor skills while under match stress and how to control
  • Where are your eyes and where should they be?
  • Shooting with both eyes open, technique to achieving this.
  • Advanced target focus
  • Barricade, barn, openings and saloon door work
  • Card table work
  • shooting from up high, “hangman’s gallows”
  • Shooting down low under tables,around barrels, or next to stools
  • Mounting a shooting position seated and standing
  • Transitions from position to position
  • Advanced challenging curse of fire designed to make you think and gain extreme confidence
  • Muscle memory drills
  • Sim home practice techniques
  • Dry fire techniques
  • Staying on top of the game
  • Discipline to be a champion
  • How to stay motivated and continue to have breakthroughs and avoid plateaus
